Textile Focus: What is the response of ITMA Asia 2024?

Fritz Legler: The response at ITMA Asia 2024 of existing and prospective customers at our inviting Stäubli booth was more than satisfactory, bearing in mind the current state of affairs in our industry is challenging to everyone. During times of industrial despair, it is all the more important that a company like Stäubli is showing its presence in the market being close to its customers. With this in mind, we definitely had a good response from our customers, also from customers coming from Bangladesh.

Textile Focus: Has any new technology been introduced at ITMA Asia 2024?

Fritz Legler: During ITMA Asia 2024, three main focuses proposing to our customers: SAFIR PRO S47 automatic drawing-in system, S3018 rotary dobby for rapier application and large format LX PRO Jacquard machine.

Stäubli’s advanced automation and digitalization systems enhance efficiency, reduce downtime, simplify handling, and lower operational costs. The newly launched SAFIR PRO S47, operable by a single person, integrates AWC 2.0 technology for for optical, non-contact recognition and measurement of yarn properties, providing impeccably prepared weaving harnesses. Over the years sizeable weaving units with our shed-forming technologies dobbies & cam motions were built up – even some Jacquard weaving is being established. Our warp preparation technology of automatic drawing-in machines SAFIR and warp tying machines TOPMATIC and TIEPRO are used in big numbers.

Bangladesh is undergoing some changes as many other textile producing countries throughout the world. This transition is very important to the country and Stäubli is keen to be close to its customers giving them our full assistance if it come to local service & spare parts topics. Keeping a high productivity is key for our customers and this is the strength of Stäubli`s dedication and customer-centric support structure.

Textile Focus: How is Staubli delivering services globally, particularly in the area of technical support?

Customer proximity becomes even more important.

Textile Focus: What message would you like to convey to the Bangladesh denim industry and our readers?

Fritz Legler: Starting off with a message to our Bangladeshi customers and interested parties, we would like to stress that Stäubli is with you in challenging times. We are in constant contact with our local team of Spintex Technology Ltd who keep our Stäubli flag flying daily.

As concerns the Denim industry, there are interesting new solutions we had introduced during the recent ITMA Asia covering a wide range of new SAFIR PRO S47/67 drawing-in machines with AWC – Active Warp Control technology for Denim weaving, TIEPRO warp tying or shed forming technologies of our Dobbies (S3000 series), Cam motions (S1600/S1700 series). Maintaining a focus on innovation despite the uncertainties that characterize the current international scenario was emphasized during the General Assembly of ACIMIT, the Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers Association, held in Milan on July 9. ACIMIT president, Marco Salvadè, showcased the data of the Italian textile machinery industry. In 2023, production decreased by 16%, settling at a value of 2.3 billion euros, as did exports, which also fell by 16% (2 billion euros).

China, Turkey, India, and the United States remain the main destinations for Italian textile machinery manufacturers. In 2023, demand for machinery in these markets was weak, but some positive signals emerged in the first quarter of the current year, especially from the Chinese market and again from Egypt, Pakistan, Brazil, and Japan. “2024 will still be a year characterized by many uncertainties,” commented Salvadè, “mainly due to the uncertainty of the geopolitical situation and fluctuations in final demand”.

In an especially difficult international scenario and with a still sluggish market, the Italian textile machinery sector remains a leader alongside a few other Countries, such as China, Germany, and Japan. “Our sector is renowned worldwide for its reliability, know-how, and the uniquely Italian ability to combine tradition and innovation,” noted the ACIMIT president. Accelerating innovation remains crucial, particularly to meet the challenges that await Italian manufacturers in supporting textile companies on their sustainable transition journey.

To highlight the opportunities that the European green transition opens up for technology suppliers, the public section of the ACIMIT General Assembly addressed a very current issue: textile recycling. The EU’s legislative guidelines aim to accelerate the green and circular transition of the textile sector with various actions: from ecodesign to EPR, from waste export regulation to green claims. Meanwhile, there is a growing demand for recycled textile fibers driven by the sustainable policies of brands that should not be underestimated.

Thus, technologies play an important role in providing solutions to companies engaged in the new circularity supply chain: from sorting and selection of garments to preparation phases and recycling processes. During the event several speakers agreed that the experience and capabilities of the Italian textile and textile machinery sector should be fully leveraged at this crucial stage for the entire supply chain. As President Salvadè noted, “Textile machinery companies intend to increase R&D activities in this area, collaborating with their textile customers in the belief that the circular transformation of business models also represents an opportunity for technology suppliers to increase their competitiveness.”

The KARL MAYER GROUP has scored an important victory in the fight against product piracy in China. The innovative textile machinery and plant engineering company has reported a patent infringement by its competitor, Fujian Xin Gang Textile Machinery Co. Ltd. and, after several years of dispute in court, has been vindicated in the second instance. The proceedings started back in 2021 before the Shanghai Intellectual Property Court.

Following an appeal by the KARL MAYER GROUP, the final judgement was handed down by the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China in May 2024. It ruled in favour of the German plaintiff. Fujian Xin Gang Textile’s counterclaim for cancellation of the patent in question was dismissed, and the Chinese manufacturer must immediately cease manufacturing, selling and advertising the machines with the technical solution that was the subject of the legal dispute. A fine was also imposed.

The subject of the legal dispute was a constructive system for heating the carrying-lever shaft of Tricot and Raschel machines. This clever solution enables the technology leader’s machines equipped with carbon bars to compensate for changing ambient temperatures. A patent for the technical innovation was granted in China in November 2011.

Solutions centred around carbon technology contribute to significant increases in machine performance, but are also the result of extensive development work.
