Bangladesh University of Textiles is the first & only one specialized (textile) public university in South Asia established in Bangladesh in order to meet the growing need for advanced Textile Engineering education in Bangladesh as well as in the world. Though the university was established on 22nd December, 2010 by an ordinance of the Education Ministry, it has a long glorious history. In 1921 a Weaving School was established in Narinda during the British Colonial Rule, Dhaka to meet textile technical education by offering artisan level courses. The name was changed to East Bengal Textile Institute in 1935 and started offering diploma courses in Textile Technology. Later, it was named East Pakistan Textile Institute in 1950. In 1960, the institute was transferred to its present campus at Tejgaon I/A. After Independence in 1971, it was named Bangladesh Textile Institute. In 1978, the institute launched the 4 years bachelor degree program in Textile Technology in affiliation with the University of Dhaka and was renamed as College of Textile Technology after a great students movement. Graduate Programs in Textiles Engineering was launched in July, 2011.

Staff Correspondent: Department of Dyes and Chemical Engineering (DCE) under the Faculty of Textile Chemical Engineering at Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) organized a Stakeholder’ discussion on Opportunities and Challenges of the Textile Chemical sector on 26 October at the conference hall of BUTEX in the capital.

IMG 4359 2

More than 30 local chemical manufacturers, Foreign chemical company representatives, and industry experts were present at the  Stakeholder discussion.

To identify the opportunities and challenges of the Textile and Chemical Sector, DCE organized a stakeholder discussion to understand the perspectives of Chemical Suppliers/ Manufacturers/Formulators/Marketers and associated others.

The main target of this discussion was:

·       Market size and structure (growth rates and forecasts, import/export volumes, SME/large scale companies, etc.)

·       Opportunities and challenges in the different chemical segment

·       Technological know-how for the industry.

·       Career opportunities in the sector and skill requirements.

Dr. Mohammad Abbas Uddin, CText FTI, Asst. Professor and Head Department of Dyes and Chemical Engineering (DCE), Bangladesh University of Textiles shared the overview of DCE of BUTEX in his welcome speech-

DCE BUTEX 1

DCE of BUTEX has been established to fulfill the market needs in the Textile chemical Sector. Apart from basic chemicals, most textile dyes and chemicals are imported, and as a result, there is a huge opportunity for the Textile Chemical sector to grow. Therefore, the target of the DCE department is to create academic, technical, and business leaders for today and tomorrow who will employ the skill sets of industrial processes and scientific advances.

Currently, the textile industry is at a critical junction – trying to add more value and localise the input. The chemical industry, with a market of almost $1 billion USD, is mostly input-dependent apart from some basic chemicals. It is foreseen that the local chemical industry for textile applications will flourish to reduce the cost and lead time.

We believe dyes and chemical engineering will be the key to creating local industry to support a healthier, cleaner, greener, and more efficient textile industry.

dce butex 2

Dr. Md. Forhad Hossain, Professor & Dean, Faculty of Textile Chemical Engineering, BUTEX presided over the stakeholder discussion. Syed Mohammad Ismail, Country Head, Archroma Bangladesh; Md.
