VDMA Textile Machinery represents around 140 manufacturers of machinery, equipment, components, accessories and software for producing textile materials – from spinning to producing textile fabrics and finishing. They represent about 90 per cent of the total industry volume in Germany. Speaking to Textile Focus a Bangladesh-based one of the leading textile magazine, VDMA Textile Machinery Association’s Managing Director Dr. Harald Weber says he expects to witness a good response of textile machinery at ITMA Asia 2024 in Shanghai if the global economy is slow.

Figure: Dr. Harald Weber, Managing Director, VDMA Textile Machinery Association

Textile Focus: How do you see the ITMA Asia Expo and how many VDMA members joined?

Harald Weber: The over 40 exhibiting VDMA members gave the show a good overall rating. Although facing a weak global economy, the mood at the trade fair was good. The relatively low expectations were exceeded in many cases. Some companies are seeing small signs that businesses could pick up again. Last year was the first ITMA ASIA after the Covid pandemic. Many visitors came probably just to maintain the dialogue with technology suppliers. This year, the situation was slightly different. According to exhibitors, ITMA ASIA 2024 saw more talks about more concrete projects.

Textile Focus: What are your expectations about the Bangladesh Market?

Harald Weber: Even in 2023, when the global textile machinery exports declined, German shipping to Bangladesh was well above 50 million Euros. Throughout the last years, Bangladesh ranked among the top five markets in Asia for the German textile machinery sector.

I am convinced that there will be no shortage of chances and opportunities in Bangladesh in the years to come.

Textile Focus: What are your future plans for VDMA?

Harald Weber: The next big project is ITMA ASIA 2025 in Singapore. A strong German participation is expected.

VDMA initiated an Official German Pavilion with two sector group stands “Spinning” and “Finishing”. More than 25 companies have registered so far for the sector group stands.

Apart from ITMA ASIA, VDMA is planning business initiation trips to Egypt and South Africa, where German textile machinery companies can demonstrate their technologies, deepen existing customer relations, and establish new ones.

ITMA ASIA CITME show has always been the main showcase for textile machinery manufacturers in Asia, that absorbs over 50% of global exports. Moreover China is the world’s largest market in the sector (the value of imported textile machinery in 2023 was around 2.6 billion euro).

For Italian manufacturers as well, the Chinese market is the top foreign destination. In 2023, Italian sales to China amounted to 222 million euro. In the first six months of this year, exports to China increased by 38%, while the performance of total Italian exports declined slightly in the same period.

ITMA

“We hope that the recovery of the Chinese market, observed in this first half of the year, may be an early indication of a more general upturn in global demand for machinery,” says ACIMIT President Marco Salvade.

Over the past few years, demand from Chinese companies has turned to technologies that combine savings in production costs and environmental friendliness, as also demanded by brands and end consumers. “Today, Italian manufacturers can offer highly customized solutions that are particularly suited to making textile production more sustainable, confirms Salvade. “The Chinese textile machinery market is rapidly evolving, and the level of innovation in the technology requested has risen due to the growing international competition that even Chinese companies face. In Shanghai, Italian manufacturers will display their latest innovations, essential for making textile production more efficient and sustainable.”

From October 14 to 18, 2024, ITMA Asia + CITME invites the textile industry to the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, China. Groz-Beckert will be presenting the highlights and innovations of its six product areas – Knitting, Weaving, Nonwovens, Tufting, Sewing and Spinning – in Hall H4, Booth C04.

Groz Beckert at the ITMA Asia

Knitting

The Knitting product area is showing the novelties of its four product groups Circular Knitting, Flat Knitting, Legwear and Warp Knitting. The Circular Knitting product group is presenting two new knitting systems and a new compound needle, developed together with cooperation partners.

Image: LCmax™

One of the new knitting systems is the innovative LCmax™ circular knitting machine needle in combination with the newly developed sinker SNK-F. The LCmax™ features a completely new, wave-shaped shank geometry. The use of the needle reduces energy costs in the knitting process through minimal power consumption and reduced machine temperatures. Compared to a standard needle, up to 20 % of energy consumption can be saved by using the LCmax™. At the same time, the LCmax™ enables utilization of the maximum machine speed and easy handling.

The new SNK-F sinker also features significantly higher wear resistance. It also enables smoother running of the circular knitting machine and improved loop structure.

Together with the innovative sinker SNK DUO-OL, the new SAN™ DUO forms the second new knitting system from Groz-Beckert. Both the SANTM DUO and the  SNK DUO-OL  feature a particularly low shank with a predetermined breaking groove. The low shank minimizes soiling in the knitting process with abrasive yarns. The predetermined breaking groove in turn enables controlled needle breakage in the event of wear at the desired point. This reduces errors in the knitting process as well as downtimes.

Another innovation is a new compound needle from Groz-Beckert for circular knitting machines. With this needle variant, the closer is guided safely and precisely in the groove in the needle shank. At the same time, however, the base of the needle shank is worked in a closed manner, ensuring maximum stability. The compound needle reliably prevents latching and thus makes a decisive contribution to process reliability. Its use ensures a uniform and speed-independent loop structure, even at maximum speeds.

The Flat Knitting product group puts special application needles at the center of its presentation. The SAN™ TT is particularly suitable for knitting of narrow loops in the field of technical or medical textiles. The new

SAN FY is designed for processing robust, uneven fancy yarns. The advantages of the SANTM series are an increase in process reliability and a reduction in needle breakage rates, as well as a particularly precise loop pattern.

Particularly durable dur™ needles for the sock and fine hosiery sector with high load limits, as well as the steadily growing portfolio of system parts, is presented by the Legwear product group. In addition, products for application-related use in the production of smooth, plush or patterned plush knits are presented. Thanks to their high resistance, these needles help to reduce knitting process costs.

Its continuously growing portfolio of modules is showcased by the Warp Knitting product group. They enable an individual and varied production spectrum including easy needle handling. The system components have been supplemented by the newly developed guide needle for piezo jacquard machines. The perforating needles are characterized by fast assembly and ensure an optimized appearance of the fabric. The new guide needle is presented with the specially developed “JacquART Visualizer”, which visually and interactively simulates the function and movement of the system parts.

Weaving

The Weaving product area presents the KnotMaster tying machine for weaving preparation, as well as its wide product portfolio of healds and heald frames. The high-performance KnotMaster is characterized by its versatility and easy handling. In addition to single and double knots, the KnotMaster can perform up to four different types of knotting with the help of Quattro technology, thus guaranteeing maximum flexibility in use.

With a focus on high efficiency and minimal production interruptions, Groz-Beckert offers high-quality healds that are specially tailored to the requirements of modern weaving machines. The range of healds from Groz-Beckert includes different versions and materials, each designed for different applications. This is how they contribute significantly to flawless fabric quality.

The wide range of designs for Groz-Beckert heald frames is a byword for efficient fabric production on modern, high-performance weaving machines. High stability, low weight and easy handling are the hallmarks of their proven quality and reliability. The heald framesn offer a wide range of innovative solutions, such as intelligent damping systems or high-performance carbon fiber profiles.

Nonwovens

The product area Nonwovens presents products for classic needling, hydroentanglement and carding in the nonwovens industry. In the field of felting needles, visitors can see two innovations: a new barb design for felting needles and the Groz-Beckert felting needle module. The new barb design of the felting needles was specially developed for needling highly abrasive fibers to achieve delayed wear. The barb shape also reduces clogging of the barbs, for example when needling bentonite mats.

The new Groz-Beckert felting needle module was developed in cooperation with the Dilo Group for their innovative MicroPunch intensive needling technology. Groz-Beckert felting needles are embedded as a module in a plastic mold. The felting needle modules are characterized by very high deformation resistance and offer new dimensions in needle density. This is made possible by the new intensive needling technology, which was specially developed for light grammages. The assembly and replacement of the modules are also particularly economical.

The division also presents its extensive range of trials on the staple fiber needling line at the Technology and Development Center (TEZ) in Albstadt, Germany, with a virtual tour.

In the field of hydroentanglement, Groz-Beckert shows its HyTecTM P jet strip, which features significantly improved wear resistance and handling properties.

Various new and further developments are also being presented in the field of card clothing for the nonwovens industry. These include, for example, the world’s finest interlocked card clothing for a reduced risk of crash. In addition, new SiroLock™ plus types from the Groz-Beckert InLine card clothing series are being presented, which enable higher plant availability and a more uniform carding result thanks to special geometries.

Tufting

For the production of tufted floor coverings such as carpets, bath mats or artificial turf, the Tufting product area is presenting its proven gauge part system at the Groz-Beckert booth. In addition to needle and looper modules, the system also comprises the reed finger module and tufting knives. To ensure the interaction of all components, the highest precision is required in the production of all individual components. The coordinated combination of different materials and the functional interaction ensure a convincing result when using the Groz-Beckert gauge part system.

The Sewing product area focuses on presenting its special application needles SANTM. The sewing machine needles of the SANTM series have been specially developed for demanding sewing operations. The SAN 5.2TM, for example, is particularly suitable for sewing technical textiles such as airbags thanks to its increased stability and secure loop pick-up. The SAN 6TM offers high process reliability when processing woven fabrics such as denim.

Both the SANTM 5.2 and the SANTM 6 are equipped with a GEBEDURTM coating. This protects the needles from wear and damage, especially in the point area. The slim yet dimensionally stable SANTM 10 is used for sewing fine knitted and woven fabrics. The even slimmer SANTM 10 XS is perfect for extremely fine materials or materials that require critical sewing.

The Sewing product area is also presenting its patented INH (Ideal Needle Handling) quality management system at the trade show. INH enables easy handling of sewing machine needles in sewing shops, as well as seamless and digital documentation of all needle changes and breakages. The quality management system includes various work tools such as the needle dispensing trolley, the needle return box, and two software components developed by Groz-Beckert: the “INH@site” app and the “INH@office” administration program.

Spinning

For customers in the spinning industry, the Spinning division is introducing a new maintenance-free cylinder wire with increased service life and lower maintenance costs. In addition, further developments of the stationary flats and revolving tops will be presented. The revolving tops have been adapted for processing fine yarns, while the stationary flats have been provided with a new, durable aluminum profile.

Trailblazing Monforts, Archroma and Baldwin partnership propels industry toward next frontier of sustainable textile finishing … and beyond

GREEN BAY, Wis. — October 9, 2024 — Building on its groundbreaking partnership with Monforts and Archroma, Baldwin Technology, a brand of BW Converting, will empower textile manufacturers to take the lead in sustainable finishing with its TexCoat™ G4 precision spray system at ITMA Asia 2024, Stand H5A29, October 14-18, at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, China.

Given the current global economy’s cost sensitivity and the rising emphasis on sustainability from brands, consumers and regulatory bodies, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly textile production methods. Baldwin’s team will be on hand at ITMA Asia to discuss how its technology aligns with the sustainability and carbon footprint objectives of the textile supply chain, all while enhancing performance and reducing costs.

Baldwin’s TexCoat G4 non-contact spray technology presents multiple advantages over traditional finishing methods. It revolutionizes the traditional water- and energy-intensive pad-dry-cure finishing process by precisely applying chemistry including softeners, antimicrobials, durable water repellents, flame retardants, resins and most other water-based chemicals across the textile surface only where it is required, on one or both sides of the fabric. The system can therefore reduce water, chemistry and energy consumption by up to 50% compared to traditional pad application processes. It utilizes the same chemicals as conventional pad baths without needing special additives.

At ITMA Asia, visitors will have the opportunity to see the technology up-close and experience a diverse selection of fabric samples with finishes that were applied with TexCoat G4, sourced from textile mills worldwide.

“In 2024, Baldwin has enjoyed amazing success in Asia with the adoption of TexCoat G4 with multiple new installations in Bangladesh, China, India and Pakistan just to name a few,” said Rick Stanford, Vice President of Global Business Development, Textiles, BW Converting. “Factory owners are investing in TexCoat G4 because it is the right thing to do for the planet and it pays for itself in short order through water, chemical and energy savings.  Everybody wins with TexCoat G4.”

Baldwin’s recently announced collaboration with Monforts and Archroma further amplifies its commitment to sustainable textile finishing. This partnership merges Monforts’ state-of-the-art finishing equipment, Archroma’s leading-edge chemistries, and Baldwin’s TexCoat G4 spray technology to deliver next-generation sustainable solutions. Together, the three companies will support dyeing and finishing manufacturers, a critical part of the textile supply chain, in their development projects, boosting the quality and performance of their finished products, while at the same time maximizing the productivity and resource utilization of the finishing application process.

Proxima Smartconer® has been designed with the foremost attention to the customer’s needs in the optimal utilization of a winding machine. Investing in equipment that enables to work faster and reduces manual and repetitive tasks, can increase both efficiencies and overall productivity. The same applies to a new equipment that does more of what is needed, faster, safer, with better quality but with less waste, less maintenance, and less resource usage.

Savio’s LYBRA Smartspinner®: We Spin Different

Savio’s new air-jet spinning machine: LYBRA Smartspinner® With Lybra Smartspinner®, we spin different with a versatile and smart machine. Savio’s air-jet spinning machine has been developed with an original spinning technology to serve our customers in specific applications of textile production: knitting, home textiles, sunshades. Air-jet spun yarn has a soft and smooth character, perfectly adapting to creating functional & fashionable fabrics. With LYBRA Smartspinner®, we want to offer our customer a versatile, flexible, cost saving and easy-to-use machine. Air-jet spinning offers to yarn manufacturers the opportunity to produce yarn at high production rates and low processing costs.

The air-jet spinning technology use the same preparation of the conventional ring spinning. This processing works directly with slivers instead of roving, integrating three textile processes: roving, spinning & winding. Space needs for air-jet spinning is 25-30% less than for ring-spinning equipment producing the same capacity, thereby reducing building costs. Also, a smaller area requires less climate control and reduced operating personnel. This results in further substantial savings, maximizing the return on investment.
