Placement prints or engineered panels are a great way of controlling the position of a design for a specific product. The design is created to the scale of the product and, in contrast to a continually repeating seamless tile, when printed digitally, can be printed as strategically placed pattern pieces across the printable area of the fabric.

Q. How does placement printing reduce chemical consumption and wastage?

Abu Sayem: Well, we have to keep in mind that there is no way but to adapt to the technology. the textile industry, dyes & chemicals basically used in the dyeing & printing process.

As someone with expertise in placement printing, I have specific suggestions to reduce dye and chemical consumption in the process:

a) Have to select proper mesh count considering design effect. It is very important for print opacity.

b) Actual How many strokes are required to do a print and how many followed? More strokes mean more ink consumption.

c) Automatic emulsion coating systems can reduce photo-cure emulsion consumption.

d) Quality dyes-chemical can reduce ink consumption, if you use the best quality, ink then you will get the best opacity print.

2. Shortly we can say wastage means Unnecessary Consumption or Access after use. In the context of the environment, reducing wastage is a burning as well as challenging issue nowadays.

Here i have Some Points to follow in placement Printing that would help to reduce wastage-

a) You must establish and follow the recipe to prepare the bulk ink. Lots of factories in Bangladesh do not follow it. As a result, a huge amount of dyes-chemicals need to be disposed of as waste.

b) Prepare the bulk ink in smaller quantities, such as in 2 or 3 phases. If the entire amount is prepared at once, there is a higher chance of wastage.

c) If Possible substitute the dyes-chemicals. Category-wise, like class one, two, three, etc. Or hazardous-no hazardous. So that does not mix with each other.

d) In Bangladesh more than 80%. Printing Chemicals are water-based. So, during Production after a certain time, Printing Ink become dry through flash Curing heat. So, here once in a while it may be 1 or 2 hours after, we can dye load again the dry ink and reuse it.

Utilizing renewable materials* and formaldehyde-free chemistries, the industry-first Archroma NTR Printing System combines newly created pigment black and customized auxiliaries for enhanced sustainability, comfort and durability

Knit 07Oct24

Archroma, a global leader in specialty chemicals towards sustainable solutions, today introduced the NTR Printing System to make bio-based pigment printing commercially possible for the first time. Based on renewable raw materials* and designed for safer chemistry, it helps apparel and textile brands reduce their environmental footprint while producing brilliant black shades on garments that deliver both comfort and durability.

Bio-based pigment printing is an emerging technology that is attracting major interest from brands that want to use pigments derived from natural sources, such as plants, in the production of environmentally conscious textiles. Until now, however, bio-based pigments have not delivered color fastness that is comparable to synthetic pigments, and color quality and production performance have not been sufficient to support commercial-scale production.

Archroma’s NTR Printing System is the first to utilize renewable feedstock* across pigment dispersion, binder and fixing agent. Crucially, it ensures good wet-rubbing and dry-rubbing fastness, with outstanding softness on all kinds of fabrics. Furthermore, it is suitable for most popular application technologies, including printing, coating and continuous pigment dyeing, with outstanding runnability for production efficiency.

“These properties make the new NTR Printing System ideal for the highly competitive denim market, where sustainability, comfort and durability are important; for knits, where very soft handfeel is essential; and on babywear, where both exceptional softness and safety are required,” Joaquin Femat, Market Segment Director for Printing, Archroma, said.

“This latest breakthrough is another example of innovation under Archroma’s “PLANET CONSCIOUS+” roadmap. We develop revolutionary products, systems, and technologies with increased sustainability features than available market alternatives and enhanced value so that brands and mills can differentiate themselves with solutions that meet their business goals and sustainability targets,” he continued.

The result of more than two years of research and development, the innovative new NTR Printing System required Archroma to create customized binding and fixing agents to ensure fastness for the pigment black dispersion comparable to current petroleum-based printing systems. All three printing elements are partially based on renewable feedstock to reduce reliance on non-renewable petrochemicals. Archroma also developed the new system to avoid toxic input streams and impurities, including formaldehyde. Two successful bulk trials were conducted with Textprint S. A. and Jeanologia.

The NTR printing system comprises the following highly efficient and robust printing elements:

  • PRINTOFIX® BLACK NTR-TF: A non-gelling pigment black with 79% renewable carbon content**, designed for use in textile applications with no impact on fastness levels.
  • HELIZARIN® NTR-SS: A formaldehyde-free super-soft binder with 40% renewable carbon content**, designed to ensure very good overall fastness levels.
  • LUPRINTOL® FIXING AGENT NTR-HF: A formaldehyde-free fixing agent with 40% renewable carbon content**, designed for high wet fastness in rubbing and laundry.

All three elements are currently being evaluated for compliance with globally accepted standards like bluesign®, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC). The system also supports major industry restricted substances list (RSL) requirements.

“With the launch of the bio-based NTR Printing System, Archroma can now draw on the industry’s most complete portfolio of innovative printing solutions to tailor systems for individual customer needs,” Mr. Femat said. “We remain the global leader in pigment printing, with a history of innovation that includes the first formaldehyde-free pigment printing system, introduced in 2012.”

* The NTR printing system utilizes partially renewable raw materials.

** Based on ASTM D6866 bio-based product testing using radiocarbon analysis.

Japanese technology company Asahi Kasei will exhibit its broad range of diversified material solutions at Fakuma 2024, the world’s leading trade event for industrial plastics processing, from October 15-19 in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Highlights include polymer solutions for thermal management applications in EVs, a novel thermoplastic elastomer for improved recyclability of automotive interior parts, and a cellulose nanofiber composite for high-performance 3D printing.

Asahi Kasei booth at Fakuma

Asahi Kasei will present its materials and solutions in three different areas: “Compact & Safe EV Batteries”, “Improved Connectivity & Lightweighting”, and “Sustainable Material Life Cycle”.  At the battery island, the company will showcase the modified polyphenylene ether (mPPE) XYRON™. Featuring a high non-halogenic flame retardance and the lowest ion elution properties, this material is suitable for thermal management applications in EV batteries. At Fakuma, Asahi Kasei will also show multilayer cooling pipes that do not require an adhesive layer. These pipes are made of a composite of the company’s LEONA™ PA on the outside, and XYRON™ on the inside. This pipe offers excellent bending properties, hydrolysis resistance and low ion elution properties.

Solutions for improved connectivity and HMI

To meet the increasing demand for materials that boost the efficiency of 5G applications, Asahi Kasei is currently introducing new grades of its all-round material XYRON™ to the European and North American markets. The combination of PPE with other polymers such as polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) or polystyrene (PS) allows this family of high-performance compounds to feature low dielectric properties and a high non-halogenic flame retardance. Together with the Tokyo Institute of Technology, the company has created a prototype resin antenna utilizing a new XYRON™ grade. This grade offers high heat resistance and a stable, low linear expansion coefficient over a wide temperature range. This makes this material ideal for plating-on-plastics applications and metal replacement in components that require precision – like slotted waveguide array antennas.

From automotive head-up displays to head-mounted displays and smart glasses, the requirements towards weight and design of optical devices have been steadily increasing in recent years. The transparent polymer AZP™ features an almost zero birefringence and is overcoming the challenges of conventional transparent polymers in applications with polarizing light. Its superior processability compared to glass enables the large-scale production of injection-molded optical components that fulfill the demanding customer requirements. Achieving a good balance between sustainability and functionality without sacrificing cost-competitiveness is a major issue for car manufacturers. To tackle this challenge, Asahi Kasei is currently developing a tailor designed thermoplastic styrene block copolymer (SEBS) grade for automotive interior surfaces, which require good haptics and soft touch. Conventional approaches use different materials and production technologies for skin, foam and core layers in automotive instrument panels, door panels, armrests or center consoles. The new SEBS material is suitable for both skin and foam layers, which can be molded in one step by utilizing a core back injection molding process.

The connection to the polypropylene (PP)-based core layer is possible in the same or separate injection molding step. The strong chemical bonding between all layers eliminates the need for additional adhesive layers. Asahi Kasei’s new SEBS contributes to reducing the total number of materials, simplifying the manufacturing process, and improving the recyclability of interior components.

CNF-reinforced polyamide for 3D printing applications and PA66 recycling

Asahi Kasei will display a bio-based and biodegradable cellulose nano fiber (CNF). This material is made from cotton linter and features a high heat resistance and network-forming ability. CNF-reinforced polyamide shows a thixotropic behavior, making it highly suitable for 3D printing applications for easy printing, dimensional accuracy, smooth appearance, and mechanical performance. Furthermore, CNF has superior material recyclability compared to glass fibers.

The company will also present its comprehensive solutions for establishing a sustainable life cycle for PA66. In the field of chemical recycling for polyamide 66, the company works together with Japanese partner company Microwave Chemical. The process utilizes microwaves to depolymerize automotive airbags and other PA66 parts and directly obtain the monomers hexamethylenediamine (HMD) and adipic acid (ADA), which is expected to be accomplished at high yield with low energy consumption. The monomers obtained can then be used to manufacture new PA66. In parallel, Asahi Kasei will introduce its development of a new solvent-based recycling process for the first time in Europe. By applying this dissolution recycling, high quality PA66 can be obtained from process scraps and used PCR materials, like airbags.

  • Mimaki’s new textile pigment transfer printing system, named TRAPIS, makes significant savings on wastewater compared to conventional methods
  • Latest innovation also broadens application possibilities for print service providers, with the ability to print on a multitude of materials, including natural fibres
  • System to be demonstrated with Mimaki’s inkjet printer, the TS330-1600, in Mimaki’s booth at FESPA Global Print Expo 2024 (Stand F10, Hall 12)
  • Mimaki TRAPIS 2

Mimaki Europe, a leading provider of industrial inkjet printers, cutting plotters, and 3D printers, announces the commercial release of its textile pigment transfer printing system, named “TRAPIS”. Following the preview of the technology at ITMA 2023, this commercialised version, available later this year, offers an environmentally friendly and easy to operate solution for textile applications – saving almost 90% of wastewater compared to conventional methods.

TRAPIS provides a simple two-step process, consisting of an inkjet printer and a calender. The design of choice is printed by the inkjet printer with a dedicated ink onto transfer paper, which is then transferred to the application via a calender. Unlike both analogue and digital conventional dye-printing methods, TRAPIS generates almost no wastewater, only that which is produced during the printer’s automatic maintenance. Due to no pre-treatment or washing of the fabric being needed, this saves around 14.5 litres per square metre of water when compared to digital dye printing.

Additionally, this eliminates the need for wastewater treatment facilities, which can be both expensive and constrictive when it comes to where the solution is installed. Due to the smaller size, it is possible for the TRAPIS system to be installed in a limited space, or even at the front of a printshop.

TRAPIS also offers print service providers an easy-to-use option for textile printing. As the process only involves printing and transferring, it does not require specialised skills to operate when compared to the more complex seven- or eight-step system for digital and analogue conventional printing. The lack of a fabric conveyor belt in the system further minimises the need for time intensive maintenance.

Further simplifying the process, TRAPIS is able to print on a wide range of materials, including natural fibres like cotton and silk in addition to blended fabrics, with just one type of ink. Due to this, the process can be flexible and adapt to customer demand, even with multi-material short runs. The accompanying ink has also achieved the ZDHC MRSL Lv.3*2 certification and is bluesign® APPROVED, to ensure that it is both worker and consumer safe, as well as an environmentally friendly product. Like with Mimaki’s existing textile solution portfolio, the prints produced with TRAPIS maintain stretchability and colourfastness, without impacting aspects like breathability and water absorbability, important for sectors like home textiles, activewear and fashion.

Arjen Evertse, General Manager Sales, Mimaki Europe, comments, “After the positive reception we received when we initially showcased the technology last year, we’re pleased to now announce the release of this solution commercially at FESPA. Conscious of the evolving sustainability standards and customer demands, we created TRAPIS as an innovative and seamless system for print service providers looking to produce high-quality and vibrant textile applications, while keeping cost, time and environmental impact to a minimum.”

The mysterious technique of chromatic alchemy creates a captivating weaving of colors in the area where science and art interact. The fascinating realm of “Chromatic Alchemy: The Secrets of Magic Dyes,” a research endeavor that goes beyond the bounds of traditional dyeing methods, is at the center of this fascinating procedure. We explore the transformational potential of magic dyes in this complex journey, discovering the mysteries of their capacity to turn common textiles into remarkable paintings with vivid and captivating colors. Chromatic alchemy shines as a ray of inspiration and invention in the mundane world of fabrics and pigments, where the search for striking and original colors frequently feels constrained by the restrictions of conventional dyeing techniques. This extraordinary project transcends the standard color scheme, bringing practitioners to a world where colors are not only selected but also conjured, where the ordinary can become remarkable with just a hint of magic.

“Chromatic Alchemy” is alluring because it promises to provide a thorough grasp of the science, art, and ancient wisdom that come together to make these captivating pigments, demystifying the mysterious craft of magic dyes. As we embark on this journey, it becomes clear that the magical dyes are not just a product of coincidence or wishful thinking but have their roots in an intricate web of ancient customs, modern scientific discoveries, and alchemical knowledge. Utilizing a blend of three distinct dye molecules, “magic dye” is the product of Solar Spark. A yellow disperse dye, a direct blue dye, and an acid red dye are present in the mixture. The dyes only adhere to the kinds of cloth that they can form strong bonds with when a fabric is added to the mixture. For instance, the material appears green as it emerges from the mix because the blue and yellow colors adhere well to polyester cotton. The semiconductors in photovoltaic solar cells are colored to increase their efficiency in absorbing light. For the dyes to function well, it is crucial that they adhere to the semiconductor well; this is dependent on the dye and semiconductor having a solid bond.

Starting with a historical review, we will explore the origins of magic dyeing by removing layers of time. The idea of enhancing pigments by magical methods has permeated human history, from ancient civilizations that saw color as a heavenly gift to medieval alchemists who tried to turn base elements into gold. As a result, “Chromatic Alchemy” serves as a link between the old and the new, pushing the limits of current understanding while taking inspiration from the past. As we go along, the story starts to focus more on the scientific basis of magic dyes. Here, the fields of science and art collide to reveal the workings of molecules and their interactions, which give colors their fascinating qualities. We encourage you to explore the world of molecular alchemy, where pigments that defy the conventional color spectrum are created through the formation of bonds and the dancing of electrons. Demystifying the mystery behind the seemingly ethereal colors, the delicate dance of atoms is revealed through perceptive explanations and engaging examples.

However, “Chromatic Alchemy” is more than just a technical essay. It is a celebration of the artist’s intuitive relationship with the enchanted medium and an ode to creation. The book delves into the mutually beneficial relationship between the artist and the pigments, emphasizing the significance of artistic expression and skill in unlocking the complete potential of magic colors. The story is laced with tricks, advice, and tales from seasoned alchemists and modern artists, encouraging readers to embrace their artistic adventure in the fascinating world of colorful alchemy.

“Chromatic Alchemy” transforms into a helpful manual in the last chapters, providing detailed directions for anyone ready to go on their magical dyeing journeys. The book offers a path for both new and seasoned artists to include the enthralling charm of magic dyes into their works, from choosing the appropriate supplies to becoming proficient in the alchemical procedures. More than just something to read, “Chromatic Alchemy: The Secrets of Magic Dyes” is an invitation to set out on a journey of transformation in which colors morph from simple pigments into magical mediums. The possibility for originality, inventiveness, and a fresh understanding of the alchemy that results from the union of science and art in the enchanted realm of dyeing grows as the pages turn.

    Exposing the Mysteries

Beyond the world of needlework and dream-weaving, in the magical workshop of Chromatic Alchemy, there lies a mysterious workshop. The ethereal realm of hand-dyed embroidered fabrics calls crafters and stitchers alike to discover this paradise tucked away in the center of creativity. This is where the ordinary becomes extraordinary, and the mundane becomes spectacular.

    A Colourful Symphony

Making with a Purpose: Aria Nightshade, the mysterious creator of Chromatic Alchemy, has a natural affinity for colors. Aria creates a symphony of colors that dance across the fabric like forgotten spell whispers, using both an artist’s vision and a sorcerer’s touch. Every dye bath is a ceremony that evokes long-forgotten knowledge inherited from generations.

    The Alchemical Method

Perfect Zweigart fabrics are used at the start of the alchemy because of their exceptional quality. These empty canvases are waiting to be transformed. Fiber-reactive dyes simmer in Aria’s cauldron, each vial promising brilliance. She stirred the beverage, added intention, and then dipped the cloth. The colors seep into the fibers, taking on their character.

    The Shadow Movement

The fabric’s actual nature becomes apparent when it dries. Its surface is covered with shifting, shimmering shadows. Every piece is unique and carries the mark of Aria’s magic. Certain textiles have a glow of celestial pinks resembling morning’s first light. Some people have the midnight blues, as though the night sky is stitched right into them.

Aida, Evenweave, and Linen Chromatic Alchemy Tapestry of Offerings serve discriminating artisans looking for materials that go beyond the ordinary. Let’s examine what they have to offer:

    • Aida: A reliable base, Aida fabric is a beloved partner among cross-stitch fans. But in Aria’s possession, it goes beyond practicality. The Salvia Aida, dyed under the December moon, has amethyst and moonstone tones. It talks of secret roads and forgotten gardens.
    • Evenweave: Evenweave fabric provides a sophisticated canvas for individuals who desire elegance. With a finer weave, the Salvia Evenweave mimics the enchantment of the Aida. Its strands capture sunlight in beautiful webs, shimmering like spider silk.
    • Linen: Known for its ageless charm, linen cloth is a connoisseur’s pick. Dyed under a waning crescent, the Salvia Linen is a symphony of earth tones. The browns and greens of the moss invite storytellers to weave their stories.

Limited Editions: A View of the Future

Chromatic Alchemy releases a new limited-edition fabric every month. These fleeting works of art appear as flashes of wonder in Aria’s dreams. Using Moonlit Opal Linen, with its iridescent sheen reflecting long-forgotten constellations, picture yourself stitching your ancestral crest. Or maybe you’re looking for the Stardust Evenweave, where silver threads weave together stories of the cosmos.

    The Design Overlay:

    • A Dream-Weaving Portal to Imagination: The Design and Fabric Viewer is a portal that Chromatic Alchemy currently provides. Here, the fabrics and your patterns work in perfect harmony. Upload your design and observe it materialize on the Salvia colors. The observer imagines whispering possibilities: a moonlit garden full of ghostly roses, a dragon’s wing against dusk.
    • Creating a tale: Chromatic Alchemy challenges you to sew magic into reality by using your needle as a wand. Their materials conceal mysteries waiting to be discovered, whether you’re a newbie or an experienced wizard. Recognize that when you stitch, you are not just weaving threads but also fate.

In the concluding pieces of “Chromatic Alchemy: The Secrets of Magic Dyes,” we are at the nexus of cutting-edge science, age-old knowledge, and unbounded imagination. The path described in the previous pages leads to a profound realization of the transformational potential that magic dyes possess—a power that goes beyond the traditional bounds of textile creation. A pleasing synthesis appears when we consider the investigation of past customs, the alchemical origins, and the scientific complexities that support magic dying. The mosaic of hues that have been fashioned throughout history bears witness to the continuous fascination that people have had with the captivating potential of pigments. In addition to demystifying the occult craft, “Chromatic Alchemy” encourages readers to accept the complex nature of this artistic undertaking. The complex chemistry that gives magic dyes their color is one of the most important discoveries. The book’s scientific discussion sheds light on the molecular relationships and structures that provide these pigments with captivating properties. This insight increases our understanding of the intricacy of color creation and instills fresh respect for the creativity required to manipulate color’s primary constituents.

The focus of “Chromatic Alchemy” is on the harmonious connection between the pigments and the practitioner; this takes the book beyond a technical guidebook. It turns into a celebration of the artist’s intuition and the understanding of the creative spirit’s capacity for transformation. Experienced alchemists and modern artists share their stories, observations, and helpful advice like beacons, directing aspiring practitioners towards a deeper and more satisfying connection with the magical medium. “Chromatic Alchemy” assumes the role of a mentor in the last chapters, offering guidance to individuals eager to go out on their alchemical adventures. The practical advice and detailed instructions guarantee that the once mysterious magic pigments become available to anybody wishing to add a magical touch to their crafts. Readers are encouraged by the book to embrace experimentation, push the envelope in their artistic expression, and experience the delight of seeing colors come to life via their creative alchemy. “Chromatic Alchemy: The Secrets of Magic Dyes” is an invitation to investigate the unusual and rise above the ordinary, not merely a guide.
