Desk Report:The Nordic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) in Bangladesh, organized an event titled ‘Promoting Circularity for a Sustainable Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry in Bangladesh’ co-hosted with the Nordic Embassies in Dhaka – Sweden, Denmark and Norway – and Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh along with the Sustainable Fashion Platform, while GIZ joined the event as the Strategic Partner.

In the event a panel discussion titled “Policy and Roadmap Ahead”, Commerce Ministry Additional Secretary Md Hafizur Rahman, BKMEA Vice-President Akhter Hossain Apurbo, BGMEA Director Abdullah Hil Rakib, Reverse Resources Head of Operations Mumit Hasan, discussed about what policy and roadmap Bangladesh should follow. In the panel discussion, Hilde Van Duijn Head of Global Value Chains Circle Economy, Netherlands and partner of UNIDO within scope of SWITCH to Circular Economy project (funded by EU and Finland Government) moderated the session.
Bangladesh could save as much as $500 million annually if the cotton waste generated by its garments sector is recycled, according to panelists The country’s garment sector currently generates 5.77 lakh tonnes of textile waste each year. Of this amount, two-thirds are exported. So need a good policy and roadmap by the government.

The RMG sector accounts for over 80% of Bangladesh’s total export to the world, earning over $42 billion in 2021-22s. Sustainability has been one of the burning issues in the textile and garment industry of Bangladesh for quite some time now.
